Heat stamping machines or imprinters, often referred to as hot foil coders, utilize simple and reliable mechanical technology. Hot stamp printing is a process in which heated type is pressed firmly against the item you are printing with a ribbon/foil between. The ribbon/foil transfers pigment from a polyester carrier onto the product. It can produce a high quality, permanent smudge-resistant mark. Heat stamping machines are typically used to mark non-variable codes such as date codes, lot numbers, expiration dates and product codes on labels or packaging. Hot stamp coders feature engraved or cast type characters, dies or wheel numbering units – typically made out of metal or silicone. To change the code, the machine operator must manually change the type characters or slugs. This is a relatively easy task and can be easily achieved with basic training.
Clean and effective
Heat stamping machine is also a clean and incredibly effective process. Because hot foil stamping machines work with rolls of metal foil or pre-dried inks, engineers can avoid mixing liquid inks and cleaning up messy spills.
High-quality results
Heat stamping machine also consistently produces high-quality results — regardless of the pigment or metallic coloration of the foil, adherence bases are created to have a strong grip on product surfaces. However, some materials — such as leather — require specialty foils in order to properly adhere, which is important for product managers to keep in mind.
Wide range of applications
Though primarily used as a finishing process, the heat stamping machine method has other applications, as well. For instance, in automotive manufacturing, heat stamping machine can be used to maximize steel malleability. The process is similar to warm forming; however, the dies are cold when pressed into the heated steel, which creates martensite microstructures in the steel that give the part exceptional strength. This makes heat stamping machine useful in the production of strong vehicle cabins and safety cages, among other parts.

Types of Heat Stamping Machine
Clamshell heat press
This model opens and closes like a clam. The top of the machine opens to about a 45-degree angle. Closing the machine – when the top and bottom of the platens meet the press will snap close. This model is the most common amongst beginners and professionals as it is easy to operate and takes up little floor space.
Swing away heat press
Known as swingers in the industry, are designed to allow the top of the machine to swing away from the bottom platen. You will notice that the naming convention for each of these machines is literally describing the function of how the machines open and close. The swing-away feature allows for better positioning of the garment without the fear of burning yourself. Unlike the clamshell press, the swing-away press allows thicker substrates such as ceramic tile, hats and even mugs.
Pull-out drawer heat press
This heat press model is unique as the lower platen pull-out toward the operator is similar to a drawer – hence the name “drawer” heat press. This feature allows the user to easily layout their garment without the worry of burning themselves on the upper platen when fixing the garment position. Another neat feature is the movable work surface, as this prevents the design from shifting out of place before the transfer starts.
Portable heat press
For the hobbyist looking to start experimenting and personalizing on-off garments, a portable heat press might be the best route. These are perfect for simple heat transfer vinyl and dye-sublimation transfer onto t-shirts, tote bags and baby bodysuits.
Work Principle of Heat Stamping Machine
The working principle of the heat stamping machine is actually to process the equipment by adding positive pressure based on negative pressure with special glue. The hot press also has the characteristics of high pressure, low temperature, and short film pressure time. When processing workpieces with negative pressure equipment, it solves the problem of deformation and makes the deformation of workpieces reduced. It ensures the quality and performance of products.
The press machines on the market with hot preparation can automatically complete the processing of table feeding, table raising, heating, vacuuming, forming, demolding, and table lowering. It is mainly driven by oil pressure and compressed air, so there should be enough air pressure and air volume. The frame is composed of steel plates, and the structure is reasonable. The two working tables can be recycled or used separately.
Pulse heating principle, due to the special design of the surface of the welding head, the resistance of the welding surface of our hot press machine is very small, and the current will pass through the section with the smallest resistance. By changing the voltage and adjusting the current level, the weld head is heated through. A 2000W transformer is used in our hot press machine to generate a high current at a low voltage, which heats the weld head. The greater the pulse ratio, the greater the current output and the faster the weld head heats up.
Heat Stamping Machine Structure
In general, a heat stamping machine consists of the following components, and the variation between different brands is typically only a minor difference in operation or structural design. However, some of the more advanced heat stamping machine manufacturers offer composite models, which include additional rolling and cutting functions in the front half of the mechanism.

Select your materials
- For a successful heat transfer, choosing suitable materials is essential. You will need a heat stamping machine, transfer paper, and the fabric you want to print on. The fabric selection depends on your preference; cotton, polyester, or a blend is best for heat press printing. Cotton is excellent for printing images and logos, while polyester is best suited for designs that require more vibrant and intense colors.
- When selecting the transfer paper, choose quality paper compatible with your printer. Different printers require specific types of transfer paper, so check the manufacturer's instructions before purchasing. Generally, there are two types of transfer paper: Light and dark. Light transfer paper suits light-colored fabrics, while dark transfer paper suits dark-colored or colored fabrics. Finally, double-check the transfer paper compatibility with your printer and the material you plan to use.
- Having the correct materials is critical to obtaining professional results when using a heat stamping machine. Getting quality supplies is the foundation for success in heat transfer printing. Choosing the materials best suited to your specific needs will ensure you create a personalized product that will last a long time.
Choose a design
- With numerous designs available, selecting the right design for your project can be challenging, but making a good impression is essential. If you're working on a professional project, logos or product images typically work well, while personal items such as t-shirts, personalized sayings, and catchy phrases can be significant.
- You can use pre-made designs or create your artwork on graphic design software. You can also use clipart to create something unique and more personalized for your project. After choosing a perfect design, save it on your computer and open the image on your transfer paper software. Select the size and orientation, and prepare it for printing.
- When selecting a design, you must consider your target audience, the purpose for which you're doing the project, and the colors you want to use. Aim for a visually appealing design that is easy to see to make your design stand out.
- The design you choose can make or break the success of your project. Choose a design that will make the best impression and represent your message, whether a logo or a funny catchphrase. Take your time while choosing or creating a design to avoid waste or even having to do the project again.
Print your chosen design on the transfer paper
- Once you have chosen the design to transfer onto your desired fabric, it is time to print it on heat transfer paper. Ensure that your design is well suited for transfer paper and that you have the correct type of printer to print onto it. Using the correct printer and heat tape ensures you correctly print your design.
- Mirror your design before printing on the transfer paper. Your design will flip once you transfer it onto the fabric, so mirror the image before printing to ensure it appears correctly on the material.
- When you have loaded the transfer paper into your printer, print the design onto the paper as you would with any other paper, following the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure the ink is dry before setting up the heat press to transfer your chosen design.
Set up the heat press
- Once you have printed your design onto the transfer paper, it's time to set up your heat stamping machine. First, plug in and switch on your heat stamping machine correctly. Once you turn on the machine, set the correct temperature and timing settings according to the instructions provided by the machine's manufacturer.
- Ensure that the plates and the entire machine are clean before use to prevent damage or the transfer of unwanted particles to your fabric. Place a clean cloth on the bottom plate to ensure the hot metal plate does not damage your fabric. Let your fabric cool entirely before positioning it between the plates in preparation for pressing, avoiding any risk of injury to the user.
Position the fabric between the top and bottom plates
- Once you have set up your heat press and selected your materials, it is time to begin printing. The first step in this process is to position the fabric you want to print on between the top and bottom plates of the heat press.
- Ensuring you correctly position and spread the fabric evenly on the press is essential. You can do this by following these simple steps: Lay the fabric flat on the heat press's bottom plate, ensuring any wrinkles or creases smooth out. Ensure the fabric is positioned centrally on the plate so your design prints accurately. If you are printing on multiple layers of material or a garment with a seam or collar, take extra care when positioning the fabric.
- Once you correctly position the fabric, you can proceed to the next step: Placing your design on the cloth. Be cautious of the paper type or fabric.
Using a heat stamping machine is straightforward, but there are a few things you should know before starting your custom creation journey.
Flatten the surface
When pressing designs onto fabric, ensure the material is smooth and wrinkle-free before you start. Any wrinkles or bunched areas could skew your design.
Don’t rush
Take your time aligning the substrate on the lower platen and placing the design onto the substrate. If you rush, you might misalign the substrate or design, resulting in a tilted or uncentered product.
Preheat
Preheat your garments or accessories before you start the printing process. Adding a sprinkle of heat will help smoothen out any wrinkles or moisture, allowing the design to adhere better.
Follow instructions
Before using your heat stamping machine, take a few minutes to read through the application instructions. These instructions often contain vital information, including temperature and time settings.
Protect your equipment
Avoid spending extra time cleaning your lower platen between designs by using a heat press cover sheet. These help keep the lower platen clean and ready to go for different designs.
