Advertisements, business or personal signs and logos, walls and windows decals, or even car graphics, all of these eye-catching graphic designs are typically made with a thin, flexible, self-adhesive material called solid vinyl. Solid vinyl is durable and can also be waterproof, which makes it very versatile. It comes in many forms, like matte, glossy, metallic, glitter, patterned, and many more. It mostly comes in a glossy finish. It usually has a matte finish. While permanent vinyl, also known as “outdoor vinyl,” is perfect for water bottles, coffee mugs, car decals, and any outdoor application. Many crafters loved permanent vinyl for its long-lasting adhesive that can withstand elements. Although it’s not truly permanent, it can last for up to eight years, unlike removable vinyl, which can be used for up to three years.
Advantages of Solid Vinyl
Money-saving
Adding numbers, names or logos to clothes is quick and easy. Even two or three colors designs, can be quickly finished. For the design, you only need custom cut the design and weed the image. In other words, say goodbyes to expensive software and messy inks and chemicals for the job.
Durable
People frequently wear uniforms and jerseys, which means wear and tear are common. The good thing about solid vinyl prints is that they last long, even after many washes.
Personalized design
Not only logos but those who want personalized designs on t-shirts, swimsuties, jackets, bags, umbrellas, cozies, the list goes on. As you get what you see, you don’t even have to make changes. No matter what color, texture, or pattern, the same design could be cut easily in any variety of colors and textures.
Fine details
The design is first cut into the solid vinyl. This makes it easy to replicate the exact design, without missing out even a small detail. Remember the smaller detail will be harder to weed out the unwanted the solid vinyl from the design.

What Are Some Tools to Use With Your Solid Vinyl
As every crafter knows, you can’t accomplish anything without the right tools. Sewing requires a needle, thread and scissors. Stamping requires stamps, ink and different papers. In the same way, solid vinyl work requires a unique set of tools to help you get exactly the results you’re looking for. In no particular order, here are a few of the tools you may want to think about collecting if you plan on completing a solid vinyl project sometime in the future.
Electronic cutting machine
This type of machine is exactly what it sounds like. It helps you cut solid vinyl into all kinds of different shapes and sizes, and makes the process far easier and more streamlined than if you were to attempt it by hand. Unlike a simple sewing machine or something else that’s hand-operated, this is an electronic machine that operates according to computer prompts.
Software
There are lots of different versions of cutting machine software that will allow you to interact with your cutting machine and give it instructions to cut out your design in precisely the shape you want as a result.
Blades
As excellent as cutting machines are, you will need to replace their blades regularly. Make sure to shop for blades that are compatible with your specific cutting machine, or else you’ll be in for a disappointment when you try to attach them.
Cutting mats
You don’t want to get so carried away in your cutting, sticking and pinning that you accidentally cut directly through your tablecloth or whatever else you have down over your work area. To prevent this, invest in a cutting mat that will protect all your everyday surfaces from your cutting madness.
Weeding hook
Weeding is a process that lets you remove all the little pieces of solid vinyl that aren’t part of your design, but that a cutting machine might not quite have caught. A weeding hook is a tool that lets you do this — it’s a fine-tipped little hook that looks similar to something the dentist might use during your regular cleaning.
Transfer tape
Moving your solid vinyl away from its original backing and transferring it to its new home? You’ll want transfer tape to help you keep all the pieces together for this transition phase.
Application tool
This is a tool that helps you apply your solid vinyl decal with precise, even movements. You can also do this with your hand or even a credit card, but this tool helps ensure the best and most even outcome.
Masking tape
This heavy-duty tape is excellent for positioning your solid vinyl while you’re still trying to arrange it and aren’t committed to pressing it down yet.
Iron or heat press
For those heat-activated solid vinyl decals, an iron is a must-have tool. It will help your heat clings stick to their new surface and, in some cases, will literally iron them into place.
Parchment paper
Anytime you plan to apply heat, you’ll want to have this type of paper down as a protective layer over your surface, so you don’t accidentally damage your table or counter.
Using Adhesive Solid Vinyl
Step 1: Clean your surface
The first thing you will want to do is make sure the surface that you are planning on applying the solid vinyl to is clean and dry. The smoother your surface the easier it will be to transfer your solid vinyl onto, but rougher surfaces like wood, textured walls, etc. Will still work.
Step 2: Cut your design
You can cut your design by hand or use a craft cutter. After your design is all cut, remove the excess solid vinyl from around your image/lettering (this is called weeding).
Step 3: Apply your transfer tape
Simply place your transfer tape over your solid vinyl, then take something flat and hard (i.E. Credit card, scraper, application tool, etc.) to smooth out any bubbles and to make sure it is securely fastened to the solid vinyl. Next you will carefully pull off the backing paper from the solid vinyl being careful to make sure that the solid vinyl has transferred to your tape.
Step 4: Adhere your design
Carefully position it onto your project; once you have it in place, firmly press down and use your scraper to smooth out any bubbles. Always make sure to start from the center and work out towards the edges, this will press out any bubbles instead of pushing them in. Once you have your solid vinyl securely adhered to your surface, take one corner of your transfer tape and slowly pull downwards at an angle. Run your scraper/application tool (credit card, etc.) over the solid vinyl once applied to get out any remaining bubbles and help secure it to the surface.

What Can You Put Solid Vinyl On?
Now that you know how to apply solid vinyl, have you ever wondered what you could put solid vinyl onto? As a craft enthusiast, you indeed do. Come on and check this list:
Glass – Coffee mugs, bottles, pantry containers, windows. Metal - insulated double-wall ramblers and tumblers, buckets, fridges, cars. Plastic – tumbler, bins, phone case and cover, toys, acrylic dishes, and trays, school supplies. Ceramics – mugs, base, jars, bowls, plates
Wood – Signs, souvenirs, cabinets, frames, home décor, chalkboard, clipboards. Paper – notebooks, boxes. Canvas – home decors. Anything with a flat, hard, and smooth surface can be a substrate for your solid vinyl. What about canvas? It’s sometimes rough and coarse, maybe tight or loose. Yes, solid vinyl can stick to the canvas, but you need some technique.
Plastic boxes
Boxes are the easiest way to store vintyl rolls. Any box will do, a cardboard box, a basket, anything you have will work. For me, I found the clear plastic boxes to be my favorite. I like to see the rolls and it keeps them protected from dust and dirt.
Choose a box with a lid if you are going to be stacking them on top of each other. Clear boxes make it easy to see what is in them without opening each box up. Stackable clear shoe boxes are a great option for rolls of solid vinyl stored on their sides. Depending on how many rolls you have, a separate box can be used for adhesive solid vinyl and another for heat transfer solid vinyl.
Plastic bag holders
The plastic bag dispensers are one of the most popular solid vinyl storage idea on the internet. The good news is that these plastic bag holders are cheap! These are an inexpesive option to store solid vinyl on a wall where you will see it.
In my experience I don’t like that I had to unroll the solid vinyl from the original cardboard roll in order for it to fit into the holes. They look pretty if you are using solid vinyl rolls as a way to decorate your craft room. However, when it comes to actually using the solid vinyl rolls once you cut from the roll it no longer looks pretty.
Shoe rack
Repurpose a shoe rack. You can use a shoe rack to store your solid vinyl rolls, with each pocket holding a different color or size of solid vinyl. This is a great way to keep your solid vinyl neatly organized and easy to access.
Over the door solid vinyl hanger
This is a storage solution that works great for small spaces. It takes advantage of the space behind your door and only requires you to unpack and fill the container. If the hooks prevent your door from closing you can use the option with a strap to hang from a wall hook or another door hook that works in your space. I have seen this style of hanger placed on a curtain rod on a wall as well.
Diy storage unit
Another great way to take advantage of the skinny space between the door and the wall by is by building a skinny shelf. If you have basic tool skills, this diy wall shalf is made from scrap wood and dowels. Its the perfect solution for crafters with a lot of solid vinyl rolls they want to see and use often.
Wire baskets
Wire baskets can be used for rolls of all sizes. Sort solid vinyl by color for a pretty visual effect in your craft space.
Pvc pipes
Adding pvc pipes inside any bookshelf to make the most of every inch of storage space. If you have many colors you pull from often this a great way to sort solid vinyl without it getting damaged or creased. The pipes keep everything in its space without the stack coming tumbling down every time you pull a roll out!
Wine racks
Two different wine rack inserts are available for the storage cabinet. One divides the cube into 9 level compartments and the other is an x pattern. Both are very popular in craft rooms.
Smart solid vinyl
Smart solid vinyl has wider rolls than standard solid vinyl. I like to keep my solid vinyl rolls inside their original boxes and stack them together inside my shelving.
