What Is Craft Cutter

Craft cutting, is a method of 2d cutting using a machine with a stylus-style blade. This method is cheaper than other 2d methods like laser cutting. While there's no engraving option, other than the standard vinyl, a craft cutter can handle many different materials including cardstock, paper, t-shirt transfers, and fabric. There are two general types of vinyl cutters: Hobbyist and professional. For specialized vinyl sheets and membership-based access to pre-drawn templates. The process for using either type is similar: Create a vector-based image, cut the material, "weed" the unwanted pieces, and transfer the cut material onto the desired surface.

Advantages of Craft Cutter

It does the job

The craft cutters can die cut pretty much any shape and design in many different varieties of papers, vinyls, fabrics, etc. It’s great for creators and artists who make their own products such as stickers, cards, paper crafts, and more.

Ability to pause/stop

Pausing and stopping while the machine is cutting is sometimes a trick I use if I want to cut certain parts that I didn’t specify in the cut image, or if I just need to pause to make sure everything is okay.

Customization for your designs

You can use any shapes, colors, and designs in the machine and it’ll detect where to cut, which is awesome! It is best to use pngs because of their transparent backgrounds, but yes it will depend on your project. They have different settings to help you align the perfect cut.

How We Picked and Tested Craft Cutter

We combined years of using, testing, and reviewing craft cutters to come up with a list of criteria user-friendly, dependable software. This is the biggest factor in what makes a good electronic craft cutter. Setup should be quick, the software shouldn’t crash, and it should include a vast library of images (in the tens, or even hundreds, of thousands) and a couple hundred ready-to-cut projects.

An easy-to-change blade system that cuts cleanly
If the machine can’t reliably cut through materials without nicking or bending them, or if it can’t accurately help you select a cutting depth, you’ll waste materials. And if changing the blades and using the pens isn’t easy, you may barely use the machine. Also, although we don’t think speed is a huge factor for these machines (unless you’re running a business), if you are making a lot of items, a blade that cuts quickly and cleanly might be more appealing.

Quiet hardware
A noisy, screeching machine is unpleasant to use, and it can be especially annoying to family or roommates. In our testing experience, we’ve found that a too-noisy machine usually goes hand in hand with a lack of cutting precision, and it suggests that the craft cutter isn’t as well engineered as it could be.

Straightforward licensing agreements
The image libraries available in the software for craft cutters have rules about how you can use their images (and so do independent designers who sell their graphics on sites such as etsy). This is called a licensing agreement. Sometimes the images are for personal use only, which means you cannot sell anything you create using them (lest you risk being sued), and sometimes the license is more flexible for people interested in starting a business. We considered which company had the easiest-to-follow rules on licensing and which company gave customers the most freedom with their projects.

A range of accessories available in a bundle
You’re likely to need half a dozen tools to complete your projects. These include a burnishing tool for applying vinyl and rubbing out air bubbles, a weeding tool to help remove tiny bits of vinyl or paper from a design, and a spatula to help get your projects off the sticky cutting mat. Different-size mats are also helpful if you’re working on larger or smaller projects. These machines are often sold in various bundles, with an assortment of tools and starter craft materials. But we think you should look for one that includes the above-mentioned tools, as well as extra blades or cutting mats, if possible.

Decent resale value
Electronic craft cutters have a resale market, and many crafters sell their old models online when a new one comes out. Selling is a cost-effective way to upgrade, so it’s nice if your old machine has a history of fetching a decent price.
Before we started cutting anything, we used the programs that came with each machine to create basic designs, reviewed their collections of projects and images, and asked the manufacturers directly about certain features. Following that we also timed how long we took to set up the machine, as well as how quickly and easily we could start making a project.

How To Reset Craft Cutter

Resetting the craft cutter is easy and takes just a couple of minutes. If you’re facing any issues with your craft cutter, resetting your machine will resolve your issue. This blog also discussed how to refresh your craft cutter, as sometimes just resetting your craft cutter won’t solve your issue. The major difference between resetting and refreshing is that resetting involves a reset of the software, whereas refreshing involves services of the physical components of the machine. The refreshing involves cleaning all the components so that all the accumulated dirt gets cleaned and the craft cutter performs more effectively.

First of all, remove the power cable from the power source. After that, use a soft-bristled brush or canned air to remove any debris which is around your cutting blades, rollers, and carriage. Be cautious not to touch the sharp cutting blades. Use a dust-free cloth moistened with distilled water or white vinegar water in a ratio of 1:1 for wiping the exterior of the craft cutter. Be careful with water getting inside the machine as that can damage the sensitive electronic parts of your craft cutter. Keep wiping until all the fingerprints and dirt are removed from your craft cutter. Wait for your craft cutter to dry before going to the next step. With the help of a screwdriver, remove all four screws holding the outer case of your craft cutter. Keep the outer cover of the machine in a safe place.

If it is necessary, you can use a soft-bristled brush or canned air to remove any dirt from the inside of the housing unit where the blade is being placed. Also, make sure not to touch any exposed electrical component with your fingers. You can use tweezers to pull debris since hands can’t go everywhere after that, check the set of rollers for any build-up left through and use the cotton swap dip with alcohol to clean the residuals off. Make sure not to use the alcohol wipe on plastic components as it might cause discoloration or cracking. Put the acrylic cover back in its place and screw it back into its place, and make sure not to over-tighten the screws. Always tighten the screws only enough that they can be easily reopened back. Power on your craft cutter and start the testing. Run some of your run tests via paper first before moving to other expensive materials.

The craft cutter is a great machine that allows you to build amazing projects easily. Sometimes because of some problems in the functionality of the machine, you need to reset your craft cutter. Whatever the reason for your resetting, the process to reset craft cutter is super easy, and it is a task of some minutes. You first need to power off your craft cutter by unplugging it from the power source. After that, remove your cartridge or any cutting mat installed in your craft cutter. After removing the cartridge from your craft cutter, look at the display screen and find the “reset” button on your craft cutter. You will find the reset button, usually located towards the right side of the screen near the control panel. Then, push and hold the “reset” button for at least 10 seconds until a pop-up message appears on your screen asking you to wait until your system resets. After that, your craft cutter will restart by itself and will start working properly again.

Faults in the power button
A faulty power button can be unresponsive and blinks consistently red. In this situation, you can replace the power button with a new one.

Corrupted project
When the issue is due to one corrupted project, all you need to do is re-create another.

Dust or debris accumulated on the roller bar
First, move ahead by switching the power off. Move the carriage across the roller bar 3–4 times manually to clear out any accumulated debris.

Sticking of mat, cutting material, or blade
Please note that if this happens with every machine, there are issues with your craft cutter. You can try these steps. First, power off your machine and move the carriage back and forth. Make sure to do it at least six times. After this, power your device again and try to use it for the project.

Cutting tool having incorrect calculator dimensions
Craft cutter users can cut thicker materials like balsa wood and leather with a knife blade. If the blade is encountering an issue while cutting material with thickness or density, you will see your machine not performing, which can lead to a blinking red light in the device.

Cutting space or area is dirty
Before beginning the project, be sure to clear any debris. If you have issues in the middle of your project, check for any dirt and remove it by following the onscreen instructions. Once you are sure there is no debris, press the cut button again, and you can resume the cut then.

Outdated firmware
When you find a solid red power button with loadout white, you need to proceed by doing a firmware update first. To check whether a firmware update is required, you can connect your device via bluetooth or usb to a computer/laptop; they will tell you if an update is available for your machine. It should be your job to check that there is an internet connection. You can’t download the update correctly without an active internet connection. It would help if you tried another outlet or power strip for a solid red power button.

Unplugged usb power source while the machine is performing
Machine mats or materials can cause this problem. To avoid these issues, make sure to position your power and usb cables away from the material/mat’s path.

Foreign power adapter being used on the device
The adapter for the craft cutter is white; if it is green, there is a chance foreign/divergent power adapter is being used on the device. Make sure to use the craft cutter power adapter and cord that came with your device.

Faulty wall outlet
Proceed by trying to plug the power cord into a different wall outlet in this situation. For error-free performance, try to plug the plug directly into a wall outlet instead of plugging it into a power strip or surge protector. Moreover, you can proceed with the replacement of the power adapter and cord too.

Problems with the program detecting the blade tool
First, check that the tool installed in clamp b matches the tool recommended in the design space on the load step. You can select edit tools to choose a different tool if the recommended one is unavailable.

Dirty cutting tool
First, ensure the tool is removed from clamp b, and the reflective surface on the housing is cleaned off to come out of the issue. Press the flashing go button once you have reinstalled the tool in clamp b.

Dirty tool sensor
In such a situation, remove the tool sensor from clamp b to clean it. Again place the tool back into the clamp b while ensuring the flashing go light is on.

Faulty blade/cutting tool
Use a different adaptive tool — knife blade, rotary blade, or scoring wheel to attempt a test. If your test is successful, there might be an issue with the drive housing of the original tool.
