Advantage of Transfer Tape

The substrates' composition helps converters decide what adhesive transfer tape to use. Yet, there are also the surface's three-dimensional characteristics to consider, which is where transfer tape shines.

Advantages
Flexible and conformable to irregular shapes.
Design flexibility and clean aesthetics.
Low profile allows for stacking.
Not limited to the temperature resistance of a carrier.
Optical clarity solutions.
Replace mechanical fasteners.
Converters can combine adhesive transfer tapes with a carrier to make a custom double sided tape.

How does Transfer Tape work?

Transfer tape, also known as application tape, makes applying a transfer sticker easy. It is called transfer tape because it transfers your cut vinyl graphics from the backing to the sticker's final location. which makes installation easier because the installer can see exactly where the decal will be placed before application.

To help you understand how transfer tape works, here is our step by step process to producing transfer stickers:

STEP 1
After our customers choose one of our premium graphics, upload their own, or create something new using our custom sticker maker, they select the color and size for the transfer sticker.

STEP 2
Our Graphic Design team then takes the design and prepares it for processing, ensuring that the design will look great for our customers.

STEP 3
Our talented processing team then takes a premium sheet of the selected vinyl color and runs it through a plotter. The plotter is a machine that cuts vinyl to a specified shape or design.

STEP 4
Once we've cut out the graphic, our team pulls the excess vinyl away from sticker (called topping) and carefully weeds the excess vinyl with a specialized tool. Weeding spaces in between letters such as "A" and "O" are called picks. Too many picks are very time consuming thus require an extra charge. See our Counting Picks on a Transfer Stage page for more.

STEP 5
When the graphic is topped and weeded, we roll our high quality clear plastic transfer tape over the graphic. The sticker is then cut to our customers specified dimentions. Leaving the sticker in a sandwich between the vinyl backing and our transfer tape.

Types of Transfer Tape

When it comes to transfer tape, there aredifferent types to choose from, each with its unique benefits. The three most common types of transfer tape are clear transfer tape, paper transfer tape, and gridded transfer tape.

Clear transfer tape is ideal for those who prefer a subtle and seamless look for their vinyl designs. Its transparency makes it easy to align the vinyl design to the desired surface, and its strong adhesion ensures that the vinyl design stays in place. Clear transfer tape is also great for use on irregular surfaces, as its flexibility allows it to mold to the surface without creasing.

Paper transfer tape, on the other hand, is ideal for those who like to have more control over the application process. The paper backing makes it easier to handle and position the vinyl design, and it can also be used as a guide when cutting the vinyl design to size. One downside to paper transfer tape is that the paper backing can sometimes leave a residue after the vinyl design is transferred.

Gridded transfer tape comes with a grid pattern printed on the paper backing. This makes it easier to measure and cut the vinyl design to size, and it also provides a visual guide for aligning the vinyl design to the desired surface. Gridded transfer tape is a popular choice among professionals and those who work on larger vinyl projects, as it helps ensure accuracy and consistency.

How is Transfer Tape Commonly Used?

There are several ways to use transfer tape. For example, it's often used to improve the visual appeal of a company's signs, buildings and other relevant surfaces. Typically, transfer tape is used with decals, stickers, vinyl graphics and craft projects.

For commercial use, transfer tape is often employed to make a company's building look more attractive, impressing potential clients or customers, while also making their space more pleasant for employees to work in. Companies that want to grow their brand awareness often utilize transfer tape to put up custom decals, graphics and stickers in key locations.

Many stores use transfer tape to place graphics in locations that attract potential customers. For instance, companies often use transfer tape to place an attractive decal in a storefront window that aims to attract foot traffic.

For personal use, many people like to use transfer tape in craft projects. DIY types love the feeling of crafting a graphic that can be placed directly onto their living room wall as decoration. To make sure they get the placement just right, they use transfer tape.

How Do You Apply and Use Transfer Tape?
If you're looking to use and apply transfer tape yourself, you'll need to follow a set of rules to ensure that the transfer tape is used properly for the most visually appealing final product. Below you'll find the proper steps to install transfer tape:

Create the Design and Cut the Vinyl
The first step to using transfer tape is to have a graphic that you want to apply to a surface. Once you have a graphic you want to use, you'll typically print it out on vinyl. Often, cutting machines have a kiss-cut feature that only cuts the vinyl, rather than cutting the backing paper as well. This sort of cut makes the vinyl decal peeling process much easier.

Weed Any Excess Vinyl
After you've printed out the decal that you want to use and had it kiss cut, you'll need to weed the transfer tape.

Weeding refers to the process of removing the unnecessary parts of a design that you don't want to use. Essentially, weeding is the process of removing the material that you don't want with your design. Just like weeding a garden, you are getting rid of the unattractive parts that distract from the main elements.

To complete the weeding process, you can remove the excess vinyl by peeling it off of the vinyl liner. After peeling, if there are any extra pieces of vinyl remaining, you can carefully cut them off. While weeding the excess vinyl, it's important to note that the vinyl's backing should remain intact.

Place the Transfer Tape
Next, you'll cut out a piece of transfer tape slightly larger than the decal. You'll place it over the vinyl graphic, making sure that there are no air bubbles in it. Once the tape is over the image, you'll then want to rub, or burnish, the tape onto the vinyl. You should begin burnishing the tape in the center of the tape, slowly working outwards until all of it is securely placed on the graphic.

Place the Vinyl Graphic
After the transfer tape has been placed on the graphic, you can then peel the decal from its backing. With the decal's adhesive now activated, you can then place the vinyl graphic onto the proper location.

Finally, you'll place the transfer tape and graphic onto your desired surface. Start with the edge of the transfer tape to make sure you are in the proper position before fully placing it on the location. To complete the installation process, burnish the decal and tape, starting in the center and moving outward. When it's fully burnished, you can pull the tape off of the decal, leaving it firmly attached to the substrate.

Vinyl Transfer Tape vs. Transfer Paper

Vinyl transfer tape is a thick, flexible vinyl strip used to apply vinyl to various surfaces. Vinyl transfer tape comes in multiple colors and widths, making it useful for many projects.

When applying vinyl decals or stickers to the surface of your vehicle, you can choose from various transfer papers. There are different types of transfer tape and paper. The most common type is vinyl design, but plastic film and glitter vinyl designs are also available.

Transfer paper is a thin piece of paper that has been painted and waxed. A heat press can transfer the image to clothing, canvas, or other surfaces. Inkjet printers or other printers are commonly used to print pictures on transfer paper.

Transfer paper has adhesive on one side. You can stick it to any surface, such as window glass. It also has a layer of protection underneath. Any dust stuck between them does not damage either the sticker or the windshield!

In contrast, transfer tape is a paper or plastic film that can be placed on top of a sticker or piece of vinyl. The material simplifies cutting and weeding.

FAQ

Q: What is the purpose of transfer tape?

A: Transfer tape, also known as application tape, is a paper or plastic film that can be placed on the top of the sticker or piece of vinyl to make the sticker easier to apply. Transfer tape allows the installer to see exactly where they are placing the sticker on the substrate.

Q: What's the difference between transfer paper and transfer tape?

A: A heat press can transfer the image to clothing, canvas, or other surfaces. Inkjet printers or other printers are commonly used to print pictures on transfer paper. In contrast, transfer tape is a paper or plastic film that can be placed on top of a sticker or piece of vinyl.

Q: Is transfer tape the same as application tape?

A: Application tape, also know as transfer tape or premask tape, is a self adhesive paper or film tape that you need to transfer vinyl graphics or lettering onto a target surface.

Q: Do I need transfer tape?

A: After the decal has been cut and weeded, it has to be transferred to a substrate. Some vinyls like 6mil Chalkboard or printable wall vinyl, can be transferred by hand. But for most vinyl graphics jobs, transfer tape is essential.

Q: Is transfer tape the same as clear vinyl?

A: In the world of clear cast vinyl, application tape and transfer tape are considered the same. But if you want to be specific about it, transfer tape is just a category of application tape. The latter encompasses different types of materials used for the application of signs, from pre-masking to pre-spacing to transfer.

Q: What happens if vinyl won't come off transfer tape?

A: If your transfer tape is too sticky, it sometimes won't release the vinyl. If this is happening to you often, try tapping it onto any clean, flat surface to take some of the stickiness off before you begin. You can also try using a hairdryer.

Q: Do you need to mirror when using transfer tape?

A: The vinyl is placed on the transfer tape, then the paper backing attached to the vinyl is peeled off and placed on the project surface. Basically, it's like a sticker, that's why you don't need to mirror the image when creating a project using a permanent or removable vinyl.

Q: How many times can you reuse transfer tape?

A: Can I re-use transfer tape? We do not recommend reusing Transfer Tape as you may not get satisfactory transfers. This is because the tape has reduced stickiness after each use.

Q: Is transfer tape the same as double sided tape?

A: Unlike double sided tapes, adhesive transfer tapes only have one type of adhesive and no carrier (the material that separates and holds two adhesives). If the product requires its tape to provide a significant stiffness to function correctly, only a tape with a carrier, or double sided tape, will suffice.

Q: How to use permanent vinyl without transfer tape?

A: You can use painter's tape instead of transfer tape. A hardware store or paint store can sell it in rolls. It's not as sticky as transfer tape, but it will work less smoothly than the transfer tape. The thing about painter's tape is that it usually only comes in one width: 1/2" wide.

Q: Which transfer tape is best for permanent vinyl?

A: Cricut Transfer Tape is the most commonly used transfer tape. You will use this transfer tape for your every day vinyl uses – Premium Vinyl, Permanent Vinyl, Foil Vinyl… anything NOT heavy duty (i.e. Glitter). Cricut Strong Grip Transfer Tape is a super strong transfer tape that is used primarily for glitter vinyl.
